Barclays Bank 1

Who We Are

Our Club was formed in March 1938 and its principal objectives, as set out then, were:

  • To keep united the strong bonds of comradeship welded through many years of service in the Bank.
  • To foster the spirit of helpfulness, to provide the occasion for the exchange of greetings between old friends and keep alive the memories of the past.

While the wording might be different today, these objectives still form the very being of our Club.

“The strong bonds of comradeship” are maintained through the holding of regular lunches and other events across the country, some more formal than others.

The Club receives an annual grant from Barclays Bank PLC which helps to cover some of our administration costs (mailing lists, website etc) and also allows the Committee to provide an element of subsidy for our formal lunches. Given the ever increasing costs of travel, this subsidy helps make attendance at such events more possible.

In addition, the Club publishes a Newsletter twice a year which goes to all members. These Newsletters include stories and anecdotes from members as well as details of upcoming social events and other items of general interest.

Our website was introduced originally in 2003 and has now been revamped with a new platform and greater functionality plus easier access. Here, members can see Newsletters (past and present), details of Club and Benevolent Fund accounts, photo galleries, invitation letters to lunches amongst other things.

“To foster the spirit of helpfulness”, our Club operates Members Support. This allows older members to elicit assistance from other members in their locality. The Club also maintains its Benevolent Fund where one off grants can be made to former staff of Barclays Bank DCO or International who are in need.

For some 90 years now, our Club has evolved through many changes but it remains driven by the values as set out all those years ago.

Annual General Meeting (AGM)

The Club holds its AGM immediately after the Spring Lunch in London and this can be attended by all members although only full members are entitled to vote.

At the AGM, the Committee provides an update on business in the previous year and the audited accounts for both the Club and the Benevolent Fund are presented for approval. In addition, the Club Committee for the coming year is elected as well as the Trustees of the Benevolent Fund.

The AGM is an opportunity for members to raise matters of concern to them and make any suggestions regarding the running of the Club.

After the AGM, various documents (accounts, reports and draft minutes) are uploaded onto the website. This allows all members, including those who didn’t attend the AGM in person, to be aware of Club developments.

To view each of these documents, please click on the label under each year.
